It's the most common question of my career. Well, back in the late 80's a close friend bought a two-line sport kite for $100 and brought it back to school. It was one of the very first "big wing" sport kites- 7 foot wingspan fiberglass frame, nylon sail, vinyl tubing from the hardware store for fittings. As an avid windsurfer and competitive sailor, I was fascinated by the thing. We spent literally months trying to fly it (Kites didn't come with much for instructions in those days) and finally figured out that the beach was a better place for sport kiting than the courtyard between buildings downtown. My friend was kind enough not to wince every time I drove it into the ground. Once we found the right place to fly and had the kite roaring around in the sky, we were hooked. We flew in the bitter cold of winter, in gales and hurricanes, before sunrise and after sunset. It became an addiction for us and for several of our good friends.
