Judy Collins is the artist who created RUBY T. A graduate of New York University, she received her Bachelor of Arts in 1990 as a creative writing major. After college she abandoned her ideas of becoming a children's author - with worrying about getting a job and paying back loans, writers block had set in.
So Judy worked in hotels and clubs until she settled in as a sales representative at one of New York's premier accessory showrooms. After several years she grew tired of sales in the industry, but her creative energy and her fashion fetish held strong. Her desire to create runs deep - her grandmother was a sample maker for Bill Blass, and growing up, her mother would sew clothes, home furnishings and anything else she thought the family needed. If they didn't have it, she would make it, often without patterns or instructions. Judy never did learn to sew, but she would paint and bead jewelry and other accessories to keep the creative spirit alive. This lead to art classes and she worked briefly as a stylist, but it wasn't until the birth of her son that she was able to marry passion with experience and develop RUBY T, a series of images that glorify the simplest, most satisfying aspects of life. Finally, she could focus on a career path with purpose. The family was her new muse.
"After the birth to my son, I decided not to go back to working for anyone other than my family or myself. I wanted to mother my child, naturally, but I'd still have to make a living. The desire for flexibility and financial freedom, a fondness for fashion and the need for creative expression led me to the newly renovated T-shirt market. I thought about my new life with all of its changes and started sketching. Before long I had a series of images that represent, well. life. I screened them onto soft cotton T-shirts and personalized them with short blurbs and tales of everyday experience. The revolutionized T-shirt is my new uniform, and why not? They're cheap, easy to wear and speak volumes about personal style. RUBY T was on her way - born to objectify life and all its simple splendor.
Ruby is me, reincarnated. She is who I am, and often who I wish to be. She arrived full of energy and focused on paying attention to the details of her life. Life is ever changing and our space on earth is limited; so too are her images. They are available for a limited time only. Whenever the feeling strikes and without warning, she'll retire one image and replace it with another. This is the life she represents."
